"Wind, Winds" is a CD that was produced by Akai Electric, Japan to demonstrate their new baby, the EWI1000.  The parts were performed by Norihito Sumitomo.  The CD has two versions of each song, the first being a full performance and the second being a version without the lead part, meant to be used as a play-along.  The booklet contains lead charts for each tune.  The CD has long been out of print, so here it is for all to enjoy.  I'll try to get around to scanning the booklet one of these days.  The liner notes (without correction) are included at the bottom.

Profile of Norihito Sumitomo

Norihito Sumitomo, an up and coming sax and EWI player, is gaining much attention from top Japanese professional musicians.

He graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1985 and after his graduation, came back to Japan and started his career as a professional musician.

Sumitomo has played with many famous world class musicians such as Steve Gadd and Kimono Itoh.  This year he supported Takeshi Itoh (T-Square) for his solo project.

His talent is not only playing music but for producing, composing and arranging music scores and this CD proves that his talent covers a wide range of music.

History of EWI

About a quarter century has passed since the invention of electronic musical instruments.  Since that time, rapid progress has been made and many kinds of electronic instruments are now on the market in the form of synthesizers, samplers, sequencers, drum machines, etc.  This kind of equipment is now almost indispensable for the creation of modern music.

The EWI (Electric Wind Instrument) was born in 1987 after several years of development by Nyle Stener and Akai.  Nyle Steiner, a professional trumpet player in L.A., completed his first electric valve instrument called the "Steiner Horn" in 1975.  The woodwind version was developed soon after.  These instruments were well accepted by several top musicians in the USA but were difficult to obtain and expensive because they were individually hand made by Nyle himself.  Nyle and Akai had done several technical studies to improve the Steiner Horn to achieve better playability and human interface and the EWI1000 electric wind instrument and EVI1000 electric valve instrument were finally developed in 1987.

Like the saxophone, the EWI1000 uses fingering similar to a recorder but with hundreds of varieties of different fingerings also available making it very easy to play  The EWI1000 and EWV2000 sound module are designed as a complete set that is capable of the same sensitive musical expression as acoustic wind instruments with a wide range of seven octaves.

The EWI has won the praise of many professional musicians such as Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis and Takeshi Itoh amongst many others.

The new EWI3000 was released last year and includes many new features but retains the essential qualities that established the original EWI as the most expressive electronic wind instrument around today.

EWI will bring to you the wonderful world of music with it's beautiful and expressive sound.
