"External In Muddiness"

Question: Why do sounds routed through the EXT IN on the EWV sound muddy or fuzzy?

Answer: Confusing midi data. To fully utilize the infinitely variable control of the EWV's envelope generators (button 7-BREATH INTENSITY) you must disable similar functions on your external synth sounds. If your external sound has a fixed vibrato built into its sound and you send it additional, infinitely variable vibrato you will get a sound similar to trying to tune-in your favorite radio station while driving at night in the desert where stations cut in and out or blend with other stations. The solution is to go in to your external synth and nuke all vibrato and LFO settings. Set them to 00. If you still experience audio interference go in and set the sustain and release to 00 on your external synth's envelope generator. If this helps but you still hear a brash, buzzy sounds then change the BREATH VCF setting on the EWV (edit mode-button 7) to some middle setting, 60-85.

Craig Hara adds the following response: In response to the question about muddy sounds when routed through the EWV ... For a couple of different reasons, a particular sound will not sound exactly the same through the EWV as when played directly into your mixer. The settings to check in the EWV are either the Cutoff Frequency or the Breath Intensity for the filter. Set the Cutoff Frequency to 100 so that you can hear what the sound sounds like with a minimum filter interference. Remember that Cutoff Frequency and Breath Intensity for the VCF are directly related: Cutoff is the initial filter setting, and the Breath VCF opens the filter further with breath, thus brightening the sound.
