Programming for MIDI Breath on the Roland JV1010
by Steven Ginn

Set your EWI module to send MIDI Breath (CC#2). In order to get a sound on the JV1010 to respond to breath, you have to change the controller that the patch is set up to respond to (note, this is a very basic explanation because in reality there are many types of controllers and many things that can be controlled by them). The JV1010 has 3 System wide controllers that are basically set up globally for all the patches in the system. When you modify a controller for a patch, you can either make a direct controller assignment such as BREATH CC#2 controlling Volume or you can set it up as SYSCTRL2 to control Volume which is how most (if not all) the patches are set up.

Then you would just assign BREATH to SYSCTRL2, effectively changing that controller assignment throughout the entire JV1010. For your information, SYSCTRL1 is assigned by default to MODULATION and cannot be changed, but you can change SYSCTRL2 & SYSCTRL3. I don't believe that you can change the SYSCTRL with the JV version of Soundriver that comes with the JV1010, which is why I suggested getting the JVEdit99 software.  One final note, as I mentioned, get the wind controlled patches from Matt Black at Patchman Music. They work well in the JV1010. Also, when I installed them in my unit, something interesting happened. It automatically changed one of my SYSCTRL's (no. 2 I think) to BREATH which basically made the change I suggested to you above. Other than making some additional adjustments to Portamento and Legato, I could play most of the sounds with my controller.
